how to create your best looking video calls

Since we’re likely to be here for a while (here, as in staying home and working from home for many), why not take the time to set up the perfect space for your video calls. It doesn’t take much, but a few key elements will help you feel good on camera, and allow others to see and hear you better too.

Lighting - Make sure there is a light that is pointing at your face in front of you, possibly even behind your phone, iPad or computer camera. You can simply get a lamp from somewhere in the house and set it up so that the light can land on both sides of your face for a nice even look. Also, try to set yourself up so that there are no windows or bright lights behind you, as that can make you appear to be in silhouette.

Camera Angle - it’s always nicest if you are looking slightly up. This allows the light to hit your face well, but more importantly, it hides your neck area, which is not the best angle for most people. Simply put your device on a stack of books if you don’t have an actual plinth.

What’s behind you? This will help you feel your best in your space. Be sure to set yourself up in front of something that is not too busy and not too distracting. Keep this one area tidy all the time for any calls that may come in so you are always ready. The rest of your house can be messy and no one will know!

Other quick tips:

  • Don’t sit too close and don’t sit too far

  • Don’t have the camera too high that you can see the floor behind you or the top of your head

  • Don’t have the camera too close that your face looks distorted

  • Put some makeup on, if you are so inclined

  • Tidy your hair, if you can

  • Wear flattering colours for your skin tones

  • Look into the lens, not yourself or elsewhere around the room, to make others feel like you are speaking directly to them

  • Use headphones if needed to be sure everyone can hear you clearly and vice versa

  • Use your reverse camera to see how it will look once you’ve set yourself up - then you can tweak as needed for all of the above pointers so you are ready to go

  • And above all else, get on your calls with a smile every time. It boosts your mood, even if you’re not feeling it, but is also a key factor in making you look ready for your call.

Have fun setting up your perfect space!
