When it comes to decorating, I always say it doesn’t matter what you pay but rather how it looks and feels. As I often mention to my clients, it’s like having an H&M dress paired with Gucci shoes. Everything looks great together and no one has to know. It’s the same for decorating. The ‘shoes’ or the ‘sofa’ of the room has to be comfortable and good quality as your body can feel its every move. The ‘dress’ or the ‘tables’ of the room can be less expensive since you don’t sit on them or ‘feel’ them quite the same.

There are certain things I like to recommend you consider in the best quality you can afford. The other things can fill in the gaps and can be great quality, or, you know, Ikea kind of stuff that does often look pretty.

Here is my list.

Faucets - Kitchen and Bathroom faucets are used on a daily basis. They need to feel comfortable to your touch and have a good warranty backing them. In this category, there are still various price ranges, but once you consider the brand, the price can go up based on style or finish more than anything else.

Sofas - This is where you sit to watch a movie, have a good heart to heart with a best friend, or even to grab a daytime snooze, so do consider the best quality you can afford. Comfort is different for everyone, so sitting in a sofa at the store for a good 20 - 30 minutes can really give you a good idea of its comfort. The quality of the foam, wood, springs, etc, is all part of what makes a sofa last. Here too fabrics, style, and how far the sofa ‘travels’ makes the prices go up, but a good quality sofa can often be fetched for close to $2000, or even much less if you find something second hand.

Kitchen Stools - The trend of having counter stools in a kitchen for quick meals is lasting, and likely because they make a lot of sense. So with that, go for quality and comfort on the stools.

Bed - Some people think of a mattress when I say bed, but a bed is the part that the mattress sits on. It is without say that a good mattress is key to your well being, but the bed itself has to be great too. If it isn’t, the mattress can age prematurely, and even lose its warranty. Good ratings are what to look for online, especially for a King sized bed, which has a much wider expanse to keep sturdy.

Desk Chair - With so many of us working from home these days, a well fitted chair for your desk is an important place to spend money. Just think about the amount of time you spend on it.

Kitchen or Dining Room Chairs - These can get very pricey only because you have to buy at least four, likely more like eight. But it is worth it to get a classic chair that can last for years so that dinner parties can linger in comfort, and breakfasts and lunches always feel a little more luxurious. Again, this is somthing you sit on, so comfort is key.
